New smart ring tracks sleep in Australia

Re-Time Pty Ltd (RTPL) has unveiled a new smart ring for sleep health in Australia.

An addition to the company's wearables portfolio, the Retimer Ring tracks more than 12 sleep parameters, such as stages, latency, and debt. It also monitors vital and fitness parameters, including heart rate, blood oxygen, and steps, and tracks glucose trends.

Future updates would include support for insomnia, sleep apnea detection, circadian rhythm optimisation, and mental wellness tools for stress, anxiety, and nighttime rumination, according to a media release.

The Retimer Ring builds on RTPL's earlier smart ring for treating insomnia and light therapy glasses, both of which it developed with Flinders University.

Toku acquired by Topcon to scale AI screening

Toku, an AI startup founded in New Zealand, is being acquired by the digital health arm of Japanese optical equipment maker Topcon Corporation.

Based on a media release, Topcon Healthcare will integrate Toku's retinal image-based AI algorithms for cardiovascular, ageing, and kidney risk assessment into its digital platform, aiming to expand access to non-invasive, preventive health screening across primary care, eyecare, and telehealth settings.

WA seed funds UWA medical device projects

The government of Western Australia has announced nearly A$5 million (around $3 million) in seed funding for 12 innovators, including eight projects by researchers from the University of Western Australia.

Supported initiatives include a pocket-sized radar-based heart monitoring device, a robotic laser arthroplasty system, and an IV leak-detection sensor.

WA's Innovation Seed Fund helps local startups commercialise health technologies that improve patient care, create high-skilled jobs, and strengthen local manufacturing.
